Why did adding a new option create another with "Default Title"?

Every product on Shopify has at least one variant associated with it. If you don't specify any options at the time of product creation, your product will have an Option Name of "Title", and an Option Value of "Default Title". Shopify automatically hides this variant if it is the only one.

For reference, this is how it looks like in the app.

When a new product option or variant is added for the first time using any of the following tasks in Variants and Options, the hidden condition no longer applies:

  • Add a Variant
  • Add a Variant Option Value (add multiple variants)
  • Add a Product Option Name

Once any of these actions occur, the Default Title variant becomes visible. If you don't want the default variant to appear, you'll need to specify product options at the time of creation or delete the default variant afterwards.

How to Remove this Variant in Our App

To remove the Title and Default title, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Variants & Options section of the app:

  2. Select filter(s) to target the desired product(s). In this case, we are looking to remove this for our Pants product:

  3. For the edit, select the task Remove a Product Option Name.

The option 1 is named Title, and so we will input this in the box. This will remove the option name Title, and any variants that are included here, which is Default Title.

    Then, we start the task.

After this concludes, we can see that the Product does not display the Title Option anymore.
